Carbon Trading in the Wet Tropics
Terrain has been working hard to establish a firm basis for landholders in the Wet Tropics to trade the ecosystem services they provide through good management of their lands.

Celebrating our announcement as finalists in the 2009 Eureka Awards are (from left): Allan Dale (Terrain CEO), Mike Berwick (Chair, Terrain), Penny van Oosterzee (Manager, Degree Celsius), Gavin Kay (Operations Leader, Degree Celsius), and Noel Preece (Director, Biocarbon).

We have progressed this agenda by developing a proposal (Project Development Document) for the trading of biodiverse carbon for international verification under the Community, Carbon and Biodiversity Standard.

Terrain had previously lodged the Wet Tropics Region Project Development Document on the Community Carbon and Biodiversity website. We have now reached an exciting new step in May with Terrain's Degree Celsius Joint Venture currently being visited by the standard auditors from the Rainforest Alliance.

This means the proposal to aggregate the region's carbon has reached another important milestone.

This is a critical step in getting the Region's product to the global voluntary market. Find out more by looking at the projects section at www.climate-standards.org.

Degrees Celsius

Terrain celebrated the establishment of the Degrees Celsius Joint Venture together with partner company BIOCARBON in February 2007.

The ambitious endeavour marks one of Australia's first regional carbon pooling initiatives and will assist in drawing ecosystem services investments into the region.  Together with regional partners the venture will provide a mechanism by which Terrain can act as a broker to assist individual landholders who have reforested their land to tap into the growing domestic and international voluntary carbon trading market.

Terrain is now working with the project partners to establish validation and accreditation processes.
