Emerging Leader for Terrain NRM Board

June 7, 2018

A passion for the environment and representing the community has secured Cairns business consultant Rhiannon Simcocks the inaugural Emerging Leaders position on Terrain NRM’s board of directors.

Ms Simcocks will advise on youth-related issues and participate in Terrain NRM’s board meetings as part of a one-year mentoring program to develop future leaders in natural resource management.

The Kleinhardt Business Consultants employee and leader of the Cairns Young Chamber of Commerce said she was excited to be joining Terrain NRM’s board and was looking forward to learning more about natural resource management in the Wet Tropics and the wide range of work undertaken to protect the region’s natural assets.

“I come from a family that has been farming for five generations - agriculture is in our blood,’’ Ms Simcocks said. “And I live and work in a city beside the Great Barrier Reef.”

“Clean water, biodiversity and good productive soils are important to us now and into the future. This will be a great opportunity to learn more about the big picture and the challenges we are facing in the long term.”

Terrain NRM Board’s Chair Keith Noble said the organisation’s goal in creating the mentoring program was to build stronger links with young people in the Wet Tropics and to provide opportunities for future leaders who are passionate about the environment.

“The standard of applications we received for this role was impressive and shows there is a lot of untapped and emerging leadership potential in our region,’’ Mr Noble said.

“We are looking forward to gaining fresh perspectives from Rhiannon in our board meetings, and I suspect we will learn as much from her as she will from the other board directors.”

Terrain NRM is a not-for-profit organisation that works with the community to deliver environmental and agricultural projects.
