Backyard Blitz wetlands to be reinstated
August 5, 2015
The wetlands at the Backyard Blitz site in Innisfail are to be reinstated thanks to a Community Grant through Terrain NRM.
Members of Johnstone Region Landcare and Johnstone River Catchment Management Assoc, who are lessees from the CCRC of the Backyard Blitz site in Innisfail, are delighted to be a recipient of a Community Grant through Terrain NRM. The grants are primarily funded by the Australian government National Landcare Program and the receipt of this grant will enable the groups to proceed with the restoration of the wetlands on the site.
The Backyard Blitz Site was developed following the devastation to the old Innisfail High School rainforest area from Cyclone Larry in 2006. The television Backyard Blitz Team were joined by Landcare Australia and many community NRM groups, school children and local businesses to transform the area into an environmental educational facility for the students at the High School.
Landcare and Jrcma are currently upgrading on site the buildings, boardwalks, fencing etc with the assistance of Neato and Workways 'Work for the Dole teams'. The wetlands are to be excavated and extended and transformed to recreate a wetlands area for educational purposes. Landcare hold regular activities at the Backyard Blitz Site and their Community Gardens site for children during school holiday periods and bringing the wetlands back to their former glory will add to a great outdoor and environmental learning experience for children in the region.
