Life memberships awarded

December 16, 2019

They have served Terrain NRM and the Wet Tropics community well…so now Carole Sweatman, Bill Shannon and Bruce Corcoran have been named life members.

Terrain NRM chair Keith Noble paid tribute to the trio at our recent annual general meeting.

Bill Shannon was part of the Wet Tropics Joint Working Group in 2002 in the lead-up to the creation of a Far North Queensland natural resource management organisation. He was on the first board of FNQ NRM and remained its industry director for seven years. He was also a long-serving member of the Board’s Finance, Audit and Risk Committee. In thanking Bill for his many years of work, Keith said the cane and cattle farmer, accountant and former mayor of Cassowary Coast Regional Council had “an overall knowledge in many areas that was invaluable”.

Bruce Corcoran has worked in coordinator roles for Terrain NRM for 17 years. He’s been a catchment coordinator and a Reef Trust coordinator for the Wet Tropics Sugar Industry Partnership among other things. Keith thanked Bruce, saying his cane-farming expertise, his passion for the environment, attention to detail and commitment to his diverse roles had been prized by the organisation.

Carole Sweatman needs no introduction! Terrain NRM’s CEO for nine years, and business manager for two preceding years, has been instrumental in the organisation’s success, in the establishment of many effective partnerships and in ground-breaking projects from the Wet Tropics Major Integrated Project to Reef Credits.

The Board also farewelled director Steve Turton at the recent AGM, saying his expertise in science and climate change had been invaluable over his term. Steve has been replaced on the Board by Rhiannon Simcock. The Kleinhardt Business Consultant employee and leader of the Cairns Young Chamber of Commerce was the Board’s inaugural ‘Emerging Leader’ in 2018.

Long-standing Terrain NRM Director Peter Rowles has been appointed to the Board for another term.
