Stewart Christie to be Terrain’s new CEO
September 19, 2019
Message from Terrain NRM Chair Keith Noble
Terrain NRM’s Board is delighted to announce that after a rigorous selection process, Stewart Christie has been appointed as the organisation’s next Chief Executive Officer.
Stewart is an engineer, manager and sustainability specialist with international experience and demonstrated commitment to the Wet Tropics region since making it his home 18 years ago. He is a recognised leader in innovative approaches to sustainable development that simultaneously increase business and job opportunities, strengthen communities and regenerate the environment.
Stewart is currently the CEO and a co-founding director of Reef Restoration Foundation (RRF), a not-for-profit social enterprise based in Cairns. RRF established the first ocean-based coral nursery in the Great Barrier Reef to regenerate high-value tourism reefs affected by coral bleaching. In this role Stewart has been working collaboratively with Terrain over the past 18 months since RRF was one of the five other organisations that was successful with the national NAB Sustainable Regions Grant program.
He has previously held leadership roles for Advance Cairns and Arup and he established Possible People, a sustainable economic development consultancy, in 2013.
The board was impressed with Stewart’s passion and his strong alignment with our mission and values. We believe his skills and experience will bring significant capability to the organisation.
New Strategic Directions
Stewart is looking forward to being part of our committed team of professional and capable people undertaking cutting-edge projects that are making a positive and lasting impact on this amazing region. He will start work with Terrain NRM on 4 November, ensuring a solid transition process with Carole departing on 29 November 2019.
It is timely that Stewart is joining Terrain now as the Board is undertaking a mid-term strategic review, assisted by Professor Hurriyet Babacan, an expert member on numerous Australian and international working parties. We are honoured to have her assistance.
Terrain NRM has seen significant change since it first came into being, and we know that change is an inescapable part of life. While so many things are hard to predict – the impacts of climate change, global impacts on everyday life, election outcomes - good planning helps us to be prepared.
A recent meeting established our future intent, and additional meetings are scheduled in September and October to consider who we are and what role we play in the natural resource management of our region.
It is also essential that we hear from you, our community, in this future planning process.
In October there will be opportunities in Ingham, Innisfail, Cairns, Atherton and Mossman for members and the community to discuss this future with the board, along with focused discussion with industry, conservation, Traditional Owners and our Emerging Leader sectors.
We will advertise the dates soon and encourage you to come along and help set Terrain NRM’s future.
Keith Noble, Terrain NRM Chair
