IMPROVING PRODUCTIVITY AND RESILIENCE

Overview

This project helps Wet Tropics farmers to navigate changing conditions. We are working with landholders to build resilience and sustainability into farming systems by adopting climate-smart agricultural practices and exploring additional revenue streams.

As part of the project, we are building and sharing evidence specific to the Wet Tropics area about climate-smart farming practices and the results for farm productivity and finances.

Background

The agricultural industry generates over $1 billion a year for our rural communities. The Wet Tropics is known for its sugar cane, banana and grazing land. There are many other crops as well, ranging from tropical fruits to root vegetables, corn, peanuts, coffee, cocoa and tea.

This project is helping our primary industries to adapt to the changing climate and build resilience to challenges including extreme droughts and floods.

Solutions

Terrain NRM is helping to integrate innovative technologies, sustainable methods and resilience-building strategies into farming practices.

This project will include:

  • Supporting trials of five climate-smart farming practices.
  • Demonstration sites and field days to sharing knowledge and findings from the trials.
  • Developing climate resilience farm plans.
  • Raising awareness of the potential impacts of climate change on farming and building resilience
    to extreme weather events.

Funders

This four-year project is funded by the Australian Government through the Natural Heritage Trust’s Climate-Smart Agriculture Program, and delivered by Terrain NRM.
