REEFWISE FARMING
REDUCING NUTRIENT, PESTICIDE AND SEDIMENT LOSSES INTO WATERWAYS
Overview
The three-year Reefwise Farming project will continue to engage farmers in land management practice changes to improve reef water quality. It will focus on accelerating reductions in pesticides, dissolved inorganic nitrogen, particulate nitrogen and phosphorus.
Background
Terrain NRM and its partners have been delivering reef water quality programs across the Wet Tropics for almost 20 years. Significant progress has been made but there is more work to be done to meet targets. Adoption of improved land management practices across the sugarcane and banana industries remains inconsistent due to a range of competing pressures.
Solutions
- Agricultural extension support for farmers
- Tailored nutrient management plans
- On ground demonstration sites and field days
- Place-based approach that recognises variable conditions
