Eco-system services markets are a way to attract new investment into environmental projects. They provide landholders with an income for undertaking work for the public good.
Terrain NRM is exploring the concept of a 'Cassowary Credit' scheme, similar to carbon or reef credits, that would pay landholders to restore rainforest habitat. A Cassowary Credit would be a quantified and certified ‘biodiversity unit’ that could be openly traded. And landholders could combine this with a carbon credit to increase the payments from their habitat restoration.
