DEVELOPING A 10-YEAR WATER QUALITY STRATEGY FOR THE WET TROPICS

Overview

This one-year project is leading the development of a strategic roadmap to guide the next 10 years of investment in water quality outcomes from land-based activities in the Wet Tropics. The proposed approach will aim to deliver more than just water quality outcomes, it is also about delivering multiple benefits for the environment and local communities.

Background

A huge amount of effort and investment has gone into improving reef water quality over the past 15 years and we’ve made good progress but there’s still a long way to go to meet Australia’s Reef 2050 targets. This new strategic roadmap will also ensure that we’re keeping up with changes across the landscape, both socio economic and natural, as well government priorities.

Key objectives

  • Consult/engage with key community stakeholders in each catchment to identify regional priorities.
  • Develop a water quality roadmap to guide water quality investment for the next 10 years.
  • Identify locally relevant projects by catchment.
  • Identify opportunities to leverage investment to deliver co-benefits.
  • Identify areas that need strengthening in terms of resources and capacity to deliver projects, particularly in partnership with First Nations people.
  • Build on and align with existing plans and programs.
