REEF COASTAL RESTORATION IN THE LOWER DAINTREE FLOOD PLAIN

Overview

This two-year project will rehabilitate and restore critical coastal habitat in the Lower Daintree flood plain.

Background

This area has nationally significant wetlands. The swamps and wetlands in the lower Daintree contain rare and endangered ecosystems. It is a wildlife hotspot and potential corridor for cassowaries and mammals to move between the river and nearby escarpment.

Coastal wetland ecosystems provide fish nursery habitat and act as a buffer against flooding and storm surges.

Solutions

  • Remediation of eroding riverbank near the Daintree ferry
  • Restoration of at least 100 metres of mangroves
  • Improve fish habitat
  • Develop a managment plan with the community
